For the first five rounds of the AMA Supercross, either James Stewart or Ryan Villopoto was standing at the top of the podium. But for the last two rounds we’ve had a new victor. Trey Canard took his first career victory in Houston, and veteran Chad Reed took his first win of the season last week in San Diego. The Supercross riders will now head to Atlanta, for round 8 of the 2011 Supercross season.
Reed had history on his side as he entered into Qualcomm stadium last weekend in San Diego. Reed had already scored 5 victories in San Diego, before taking his record breaking 6th last weekend. Reed will be a contender in Atlanta, but he doesn't have the same winning record at the Georgia track.
Reed’s only Atlanta victory came in 2004, but he’ll be looking to add another on Saturday night.
Ryan Dungey won last year’s race at Atlanta, and he is still looking for his first race win of the 2011 season. Dungey has been consistently at the top, and is currently in fifth place behind Reed and Canard.
Atlanta has been really good to me,” Dungey said. “I really enjoy going back there. The fans are great and it’s always one of the biggest crowds.”
James Stewart also has a solid record in Atlanta, winning two of the last four Supercross events held in the Georgia Dome. Stewart is just three points behind season leader Ryan Villopoto. Stewart has been on the podium at every event so far, except for his crash filled race in Houston that saw him finish in 15th.
Villopoto is coming off of his worst finish of the season, but will be looking at Atlanta as a chance to make up for some lost points.
