For the first time in the 2011 AMA Supercross season, someone besides James Stewart or Ryan Villopoto stood on top of the podium. Trey Canard took his first victory of his career in Texas, and will look to duplicate his success this weekend in San Diego.
“I don’t know what to say,” said Canard. “It was an awesome race. I just tried to hang in there, because it was a tricky track. I made a mistake and Dungey gained a lot of time on me and from there I was just riding defensive. We had a bit of a rough week this week, but this makes it all better.”
Canard's win brought him up to the third place in the overall standings. But more importantly, Stewart's 15th place finish dropped him down into second place, nine points behind Villopoto. Stewart will be dead set on the podium this weekend, as he looks to make up for the points he missed out on in Texas.
“The track was really difficult and it was definitely tough for me out there,” Stewart said after the Houston event. “In the second crash my front break was bent so my wheel kept stopping in the air and it was a little scary. The good thing is I’m healthy and I’ll be back next week in San Diego.”
Canard, Villopoto, and Stewart have all taken race wins now during the 2011 Supercross season, but don't forget about riders like Ryan Dungey. Dungey has consistently been in the top five this season, and narrowly missed out on the race win last weekend in Houston.
“It isn’t over till it’s over,” said Dungey. “There’s still a lot of racing left. We came up a little bit shy and I just have to look forward to next weekend.”
