The AMA Supercross series heads back to Anaheim this weekend for the 5th round of the 2011 Supercross season. The Anaheim stadium will be unusually pink this Saturday night, as Angel Stadium hosts the 2nd annual Monster Energy Supercross Breast Cancer Awareness Race. The Pink Supercross race will help raise money for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60-mile walk for the cure.
After four rounds, we are nearly tied at the top. James Stewart leads the series by just 2 points ahead of Ryan Villopoto. Villopoto and Stewart have both earned two race wins. Stewart has yet to finish off the podium, while Villopoto's fourth place finish in Oakland cost him the Championship lead. Villopoto won the last time out in Anaheim, and could easily find himself making up those two points to take the lead on Saturday night.
Villopoto and Stewart have established themselves as the dominant forces this season, but Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard, and Chad Reed are all close behind. Dungey, last year's Supercross champion, has been in contention at every race this season, but has yet to find himself on top of the podium.
“It will be great to go back to Anaheim,” said Dungey. “We know more what to expect there and hopefully we can get a good start and put the Rockstar Makita Suzuki up front."
Dungey is currently 14 points behind the season leader. Behind Dungey comes Trey Canard and Chad Reed. Canard is coming off of his worst finish of the year, a 6th place finish at Oakland, where as Reed has just taken his first second place of the season behind Stewart.
The top 5 riders will battle it out in Anaheim on Saturday night, as Dungey, Canard, and Reed try to keep Stewart and Villopoto from running away with the 2011 season.
