2011 AMA Supercross Preview: Round 4 Oakland Hot

With three rounds down, we're beginning to see a little separation at the top. Ryan Villopoto has claimed two of the three race wins, and extended his lead ahead of James Stewart by five points at the inaugural event at Dodgers Stadium last weekend in Los Angeles.

But Dungey and Stewart are in no way clear of the other competitors. Ryan Dungey has been in the top five at every event so far, and had a best finish of second at the opening round in Anaheim. Dungey had a phenomenal 2010 season, but has yet to find the top of the podium this season. Dungey definitely has what it takes to win at Oakland, and after a fierce battle with Villopoto and Stewart in Los Angeles that left him settling for third, Dungey will be sure to bring the speed in Oakland this weekend.

“I'm definitely looking forward to Oakland and going to another new stadium,” said Dungey. “We'll do some work this week and show up to Oakland ready to go."

Trey Canard sits in fourth place, two points behind Dungey and 16 behind Villopoto. Canard is another rider who has been in the top five at every event so far this season. With two fourth place finishes and a fifth place finish at the season opener, Canard will be looking to finally break onto the podium this weekend.

Chad Reed sits in fifth place behind Canard. The supercross veteran hasn't been giving himself the opportunities to win this season. A series of bad starts and small mistakes has left Reed a lot of track to make up at every race. Reed's done a phenomenal job of making up for lost time, but he'll need to capture a hole shot if he wants to out pace young guns like Dungey in Oakland.

Brett Metcalfe and Andrew Short follow Reed in the general standings. Metcalfe claimed the holeshot in Los Angeles, but after a minor crash, he lost the lead and finished 8th. Andrew Short has been hovering in the top ten for the first three rounds, but he'll need some podium finishes if he wants to compete with Dungey, Villopoto, and Stewart.

The fourth round of the AMA Supercross series will be this Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum, which like Dodgers Stadium, is a new venue for the Superbike series this year.
