At the start of the 2011 Supercross season, all eyes were on Ryan Dungey. Dungey won both the AMA Supercross and Motocross titles in 2010, the first time it was ever accomplished by a rookie, and was looking for a repeat in 2011. Dungey still hasn't claimed a race win this year, but with a series of podiums, he is one of four riders crammed up toward the top of the podium.
Dungey sits tied in third place with Trey Canard, another rider who is on his way to impressive debut year in the 450 class. Anaheim race winner Ryan Villopoto maintains his first place standing above James Stewart, who earned his first victory in more than a year at Chase Field.
“This track was tough tonight but I haven’t won in over a year so I really wanted this one," Stewart said. "I was even a little nervous out there but I want to thank everyone on my team for giving such an awesome bike. This feels great.”
The top four riders are currently separated by just 9 points. Fifth place rider Chad Reed is also well in the hunt, 11 points behind the leader. There is still plenty of racing left this year, and riders like Brett Metcalfe and Andrew Short will surely find themselves dancing with the top riders later this year.
