When fans see Ryan Dungey’s Rockstar Makita Suzuki this weekend at Qwest Field, Seattle, they won’t see a number 5 but rather the number one plate. Dungey clinched the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship after his biggest rival broke a leg last week, no longer able to race.
At St. Louis, Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto, who was only 12 points behind Dungey, crashed out on lap 11, breaking his right leg. Due to the wreck, Villopoto’ season has ended, and not one other rider can catch Dungey.
After winning in St. Louis, Dungey now has a 77-point lead over San Manuel Yamaha’s Josh Hill, who sits in third. Since only 25 points remain for each of the remaining three rounds, nobody can catch Dungey.
Dungey will also be winning the SX championship during his rookie year, joining the legendary Jeremy McGrath in the history books for this feat.
Last year in Seattle, Villopoto took his first-career AMA Supercross win in his home state. Before quest field opened in 2000, all the races were held at the now defunct Seattle King Dome, which held events from 1978-1999. Rick Johnson holds the all-time AMA Supercross class-win record in Seattle with seven.
SPEED will air both races: AMA Supercross will be at 6 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, April 25, preceded by the AMA Supercross Lites class at 5 p.m.
