AMA Supercross: Round 14, St. Louis Hot

ryan_dungey_st_louisAfter taking his fifth win of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Ryan Dungey extended his lead by 36 points. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider now has 302 points, while his rival Ryan Villopoto sits in second with 266 with three rounds remaining.

Before 59,882 fans, TiLube Babbits Kawasaki rider Nick Wey of Murrieta, Calif., won the SPIKE Holeshot award, with Dungey of Belle Plaine, Minn., and Red Bull Honda Racing rider Davi Millsaps of Murrieta, Calif., in tow.

By the end of lap one, Dungey grabbed the lead. But his rival would be on his tail on lap 2, Villopoto of Poulsbo, Wash., aggressively chasing down Dungey. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Villopoto caught Dungey on lap 9, but when he attempted a pass he caused a crash sending both riders to the dirt. Both riders remounted, but Villopoto had the lead this time.

But on lap 11, Villopoto went down hard in the rhythm section, unable to return to the action. Initial reports said Villopoto broke his leg, but nothing is official yet. If Villopoto does not finish the season due his injuries, Dungey has a clear and easy shot at this year’s title.

“It got really hectic out there tonight,” said Dungey. “I had a great start so that was a huge help. We worked really hard this week to come out here in St. Louis prepared. It’s unfortunate that Ryan (Villopoto) crashed. I hope he is ok.”

Finishing in second was GEICO Powersports Honda rider Kevin Windham, and third went to Red Bull Racing Honda rider Andrew Short.

Returning for his second consecutive race after being out since round 2, Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Chad Reed took fifth. His rival, San Manuel Yamaha rider James Stewart, is unlikely to return for the rest of this season.

AMA SX heads into round 15 next week in Seattle, Wash.

Supercross Lites East

GIECO Powersports Honda rider Justin Barcia of Ochlocknee, Ga., took the win of the last race of the Eastern Supercross Lites race before the series moves back west.  The East Lites series leader and winner Christophe Pourcel of Groveland, Fla., DNF’d, having bike troubles.

Barcia got the holeshot, and led all 15 laps of the race. He was followed to the checkered flag by Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider Dean Wilson of San Jacinto, Calif., and GEICO Powersports Honda rider Brett Metcalfe of Lake Elsinore, Calif., respectively.

“I pulled it together tonight,” said Barcia. “I learned that the holeshot makes the race go a lot easier. Everyone on the team did a great job with my bike, and I am pumped to pick up this win.”
