The 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship had its only break of the year last week for Easter, putting the series on the final stretch of five races for the season.
Entering round 13 in Houston’s Reliant Stadium this Saturday, Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey holds a 21-point lead over his rival Ryan Villopoto. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider dominated round 12 in Jacksonville, leading all 20 laps of the main event.
Although Villopoto’s Jacksonville performance was flawless, Dungey’s second-place finish kept him atop the points; Dungey now has 261 points, Villopoto 240.
Sitting in third with 206 points is San Manuel Yamaha rider Josh Hill. He had five podium finishes, and finished every race in the top nine or better. His teammate James Stewart remains out of action, and no reports of a return have been released.
But the defending champion’s rival, Chad Reed, is hoping to get back in the action this weekend. “I’ve been working really hard with my trainer and doctor and they’ve kind of giving me the OK to get up and go full steam ahead with my stomach,” the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider said. “We’re shooting for Houston, and that’s the goal now.”
Speaking of Reed and Stewart, at last year’s Houston race, Stewart won, and Reed finished in second. Houston has been on the AMA Supercross schedule since 1974, but riders raced in the Houston Astrodome until 2002. The first race in Reliant Stadium was in 2004.
AMA Supercross will be broadcast at 5 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, April 11, on SPEED TV. The AMA Supercross Lites race will be at 3 p.m. (EST) Sunday on SPEED TV.
