AMA Supercross: Round 12, Jacksonville Hot

AMA Supercross Rider Ryan VillopotoRyan Villopoto grabbed his six win of the year Saturday night in Jacksonville, leading all 20 laps in round 12 of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider is now 21 points behind series’ leader Ryan Dungey; the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Dungey has 261 points with five rounds remaining.

“It started off as a rough day, going down in practice,” Villopoto said. “I hurt my foot. Then going down (again) the next lap after I finally got back up. It was definitely rough. I sat out the second practice, so for me it was kind of a bummer during the whole day.”

 

Before 38, 321 fans in Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Valli Motorsports/Rockstar Yamaha rider Ivan Tedesco of Murrieta, Calif., took the SPIKE Holeshot award, followed by Villopoto of Poulsbo, Wash., and GIECO Powersports Honda rider Kevin Windham of Centreville, Mass. Dungey got out of the gate in fifth.

Villopoto took the lead after the first corner, while Windham and Dungey passed Tedesco and began battling for second. By lap 12, Dungey had second, but couldn’t catch his rival Villopoto. By the checkered flag, Honda Red Bull Racing rider Trey Canard of Shawnee, Okla., beat Windham for third.

Still out of action were rivals Chad Reed and James Stewart. Reed is expected to return for round 13 in Houston. No official reports have been released about Stewarts return.

After Easter break, AMA SX travels to Reliant Stadium in Houston on April 10 for round 13.

Supercross Lites East

In the AMA Supercross Lites East Regional Championship, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider Christophe Pourcel grabbed his fourth win of the season. The Groveland, Fla., native took the lead on lap 6 and wasn’t challenged for the remainder of the race.

Privateer KTM rider Kelly Smith of Ludington, Mich., grabbed the SPIKE Holeshot award, followed by Honda of Troy rider Sean Lipanovich of Cairo, Ga., and Kenny G. Performance Honda rider Jimmy Decotis of Peabody, Mass.

By the end of Lap 1, GIECO Powersports Honda rider Brett Metcalfe of Lake Elsinore, Calif., took the lead, with Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Austin Stroupe of Lincolnton, N.C. and Pourcel in tow.

By the end, Pourcel would win, with Stroupe in second and Metcalfe in third.
