As 50,000 people piled into the new state of the art Cowboy’s stadium to watch the AMA Supercross championship event, all eyes were on Ryan Villopoto. Villopoto, who was 17 points behind Ryan Dungey going into Saturday’s race, had won the past two events and was quickly eating away at Dungey’s lead.
Dungey, however, wasn’t phased by the opposing threat and rode at the front of the pack for the majority of the 20 laps around Cowboy stadium to reclaim the top spot on the podium from Villopoto. Dungey now increases his overall point lead to 24.
"This was a big win for me tonight, but there are still a lot of races left to go," said Dungey, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider. "The track got really rough tonight, so that kept me on my toes. I am looking forward to going to Jacksonville next weekend."
Villopoto, who is still in second in the overall standings, was clearly the rider to beat going into Saturday’s race. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider had won the last two races, and had momentum and confidence on his side. But Villopoto couldn’t find the podium in front of the 50,000 fans at Cowboys stadium, and came in fourth behind Honda Red Bull Racing’s Trey Canard and Davi Millsaps.
In the 250 event, Blake Baggett beat out Ryan Spies for his first ever Supercross victory.
