The new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will host it’s first-ever race as the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship heads into round 11 this Saturday evening.
Leading by 17 points, Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey is in a tight race for the championship with Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto. During the series’ only race outside U.S. borders, Villopoto took first in Toronto after leading every lap, making it two consecutive wins, and five for the season.
Dungey’s championship lead is due to three wins, and four second-place finishes. But if Villopoto takes the win at Cowboy Stadium, he can possible become the points leader. Going into round 11, Dungey has 214 points and Villopoto has 197. But not far behind is San Manuel Yamaha rider Josh Hill with 177 points.
Before this season, AMA Supercross was held in Texas Stadium from 1983 to 2008. Last year’s winner in Texas Stadium was Chad Reed, followed by Hill and Red Bull Racing Honda rider Davi Millsaps.
Once again, nothing has been officially released about the return of Reed or his rival James Stewart; both riders are out due to hand injuries. Reed practiced at Daytona, posting the fastest lap time, but was in too much pain to compete.
AMA Supercross will be broadcast at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 21, on SPEED TV. The AMA Supercross Lites race will precede the main event at 5 p.m. on SPEED TV.
