The second half of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship heads north this weekend – way north to Toronto’s Rogers Centre, the only race outside U.S. borders.
Although Ryan Villopoto ultimately dominated at Daytona SX last weekend, leading every lap of the race, the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider lies in the shadow of Ryan Dungey. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Dungey has 192 points going into round 10, while Villopoto has 172.
On the intial start at Daytona, Dungey got the holeshot, but the race was red flagged due to J-Law Racing Yamaha rider Grant Langston hitting the dirt hard. No official reports have been released about the South African, but on his Facebook page he said he sustained several injuries and will be out of racing for a while.
During the restart, Villopoto got the holeshot, and by lap 7 he had a five-second lead on Dungey. The race would end with Villopoto winning, Dungey in second and Red Bull Honda Racing rider Trey Canard in third.
Chad Reed is again expected to return to racing at Toronto, though nothing is official. The Australian, who was injured during Round 2 in Phoenix, did practice at Daytona, posting the fastest lap, but was in too much pain to compete. His rival, defending Champion James Stewart, is also out due to injuries, but nothing has been officially released about when he’ll return.
At last year’s Toronto race, Stewart took his ninth win of the ’09 season, overcoming then points leader Reed. The first event held at Toronto was held on Dec. 4, 2004, when Ricky Carmichael won on a Honda, but didn’t become a regular in the series until March 29, 2008, when Reed took the win on a Yamaha.
Live coverage of the Supercross action will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. (EST) Saturday on SPEED.
