Could there possibly be a better venue for showcasing the midway point of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship other than Daytona International Speedway?
The track, designed by SX legend Ricky Carmichael and built by three-time National Champion Mark Barnett, features 38 jumps in a challenging 2900-foot layout that will require much rider concentration to determine the points leader.
Will Ryan Dungey remain in the number-one slot? The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider had a flawless ride at Atlanta last week, taking the championship lead he shared going into the race with Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto.
Villopoto went down during the halfway point of the race, finishing 19th. Although a bad finish, he remains in third in the championship with 145 points behind San Manuel Yamaha rider Josh Hill with 150, and Dungey with 170.
There was talk of Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Chad Reed making a return at Daytona for round 9, but nothing has been announced officially. His rival, James Stewart, also remains out of action. Both riders were out due to broken hands.
Speaking of Stewart, the San Manuel Yamaha rider went down during turn 1 at last year’s Daytona meeting. Reed took the lead with three laps to go, winning the event. Reed’s first-place finish took the points lead from Stewart.
Live coverage of the Supercross action will be broadcast at 8 p.m. (EST) Saturday on SPEED.
