After six races on the West Coast, the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series moves to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis tonight. The seventh of 17 rounds may be the deciding factor between two riders who share the lead in points.
The rookie Ryan Dungey, who has two wins this season, is tied with San Manuel Yamaha rider Josh Hill with 123 points each. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Dungey went into Anaheim III last week with a four-point lead, but could only finish fourth after some mishaps.
Although Hill didn’t win a race this season, after four consecutive second-place finishes he kept himself on top in championship points. Also in the chase is Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto. The number 2 rider lead all 20 laps of last week’s race, and hopes to continue his performance.
“This is a good spot to be in as we head to Indianapolis next week,” motorcycle racer Villopoto said. “I am looking forward to next weekend's race, and I have put myself in a good position.”
Villopoto is in third place going into Indianapolis, three points behind Hill and Dungey. Also, Indianapolis starts the Eastern Regional Championship.
During last year’s meeting at Lucas Oil Stadium, Chad Reed took his first win of the 2009 season, becoming tied with his rival San Manuel Yamaha rider James Stewart.
Stewart and the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider will miss yet another race this season due to injured. Both riders were involved in “the crash heard ‘round the world” during round 2 in Phoenix.
Also, for the third time this season five-time AMA Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael will be broadcasting the event with Ralph Sheehan and Jeff Emig. Live coverage of Indy SX begins at 8 p.m. Saturday on SPEED.
