Will the rookie Ryan Dungey make it three consecutive wins this weekend in San Francisco?
Going into round 4 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross season, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider has a 15-point lead San Manuel Yamaha rider Josh Hill. This lead came after dominating performances at Phoenix and Anaheim II.
Although the season started off well for Dungey, the team remains focused. "The team needs to keep its feet on the ground and do one race at a time," Team Manager Roger DeCoster said. "We're doing well but the championship is a long way off. We cannot get carried away and think this is it."
But the big focus will be on Hill’s teammate at AT&T Park this Saturday. James Stewart appeared in much pain after taking third at Anaheim II last week, the defending champion recovering from injuries sustained from “the crash heard ‘round the world” at Phoenix during round 2.
During the wreck, Stewart ran into his rival, Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Chad Reed. No reports were released of Stewart’s current condition, and as of Friday he’s expected to race. As for Reed, the number 22 rider broke his hand during the famous crash and will be out for a few weeks.
During last week’s race at Anaheim II, Dungey started in seventh position, and didn’t take the lead until lap 14. Hill finished second, and Stewart third.
But if Stewart’s in good health, things may change quickly in the championship. During last year’s race, Stewart won before 39,414 fans, which was his fourth of the season. And during the track’s debut in 2003, Stewart took the win in the Supercross Lites Class.
Supercross action will be aired on CBS Sports at noon (EST) on Sunday, Jan. 31, and the AMA Supercross Lites class will air on SPEED at 10 p.m. (EST) Sunday, Jan. 31.
