Ryan Dungey took two second place finishes at Unadilla to claim second overall during the ninth round of the 2011 Motocross season. The 2010 champ now trails Ryan Villopoto by just 6 points.
"In the first moto, I high-sided a rut and almost threw it away," said Dungey. "But I was able to get back on the track and work my way up into second place.
"In the second moto, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 was running great, but I got stuck in third for a little while. I was able to make the most of the bike and the track and also take advantage of some things; and I moved into second place on the last lap.
"Overall, I'm happy. We had fun... We've got a short break before Southwick so I'm going to focus on training and getting ready for that race. I won both motos there last year and I'm hoping to do that again this year."
Villopoto won both motos at Unadilla and now holds 6 points over the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider.
Chad Reed, who has been at the top of the standings for most of the season, was able to salvage a fourth place overall finish at Unadilla. But with two stellar performance by Dungey and RV, Reed now trails by 25 points.
"It was a shocker of a day for me and I only have myself to blame," Reed said. "I'll be back fighting hard in two weeks time. I'm definitely not going to give up."
There are just three events left in the 2011 Motocross season. Reed, Dungey, and Villopoto have nearly assured podium spots at the end of the year, but the order has yet to be determined.
