The Monster Energy Yamaha team announced today that Carlos Campano will be replacing David Philippaerts for the final three rounds of the 2011 MX1-GP. Philippaerts, who was 7th in the series, suffered broken wrists last week and will not be able to compete for the rest of the season.
Campano, who gave Spain their first ever FIM Motocross World Championship, is currently riding a YRRD YZ450F in the MX1-GP championship. Campano, who is currently 17th in the series, will move into the Italian set-up with the YZ450FM.
"I'm sorry about David's injury but I'm really happy to be given this opportunity because it means working for one of the very best teams in the World Championship with a long history," said Campano, who has ridden YZ250/450F technology for the past six years and is a double Spanish Champion. "I intend to push to the maximum and make the most of this. My first race will be at Matterley Basin and I rode there for Spain in the Motocross of Nations in 2006. If the track is the same then I'm really looking forward to going because I loved it five years ago. I can't wait to get started."
Campano raced in the MX1 class in 2008 and 2009, but couldn't find a top 10 position at the end of the season. Campano moved to the MX3 class in 2010, where he dominated the series with 7 victories. The Spanish rider moved up to the MX1 this year, and has scored points in 15 of the 24 motos. With the Monster Yamaha team in his corner, Campano could push for a strong finish for the 2011 season.
