It’s going to be an all-American weekend in Michigan as the AMA Motocross series heads to the RedBud National for round six of the 2011 racing season. Fireworks, BBQ, and motorcycles will greet fans in Michigan this weekend as the MX series hits the halfway mark of the season.
Chad Reed and Ryan Villopoto are currently battling for the top spot in the points standings. Reed will have the advantage over RV heading into Red Bud, but only by 8 points. Ryan Dungey’s victory at Thunder Valley puts him firmly in the mix to fight for the championship in the second half of the season. Dungey currently trails Reed by 21 points.
Dungey’s point deficit doesn’t represent how well the defending motocross champ has been riding. Dungey suffered a DNF at Freestone, which gave big points to both Villopoto and Reed. Dungey has picked up his game since then, and he’ll be riding at one of his favorite tracks this weekend. Dungey took both moto wins last year on his way to the 2010 Championship.
Reed is coming off of a disappointing weekend at Thunder Valley, which says a lot about how the veteran has been riding this season. Reed has finished on the podium at every moto except for one this year, and has won three MX events.
"I was the third best guy (at Thunder Valley)," Reed said. "We need to make some improvements, and I think I know where we need to make those."
Kevin Windham, Davi Milsaps, and Brett Metcalfe are all vying for the fourth place spot with just four points between them.
If you can’t make it out to Michigan this weekend for the RedBud National, you’ll be able to watch it live on NBC.
"We are proud to continue our strong relationship with both NBC and SPEED," said MX Sports Pro Racing Vice President Davey Coombs. "They have been incredible partners for the past two seasons and their support has helped American Motocross reach millions of fans in the U.S. and around the world. Now with the addition of FUEL TV this season, we are even more excited about what the future will hold."
