WMX: Fontanesi Doubles at Finish GP

fontanesiChiara Fontanesi pulled of a fantastic double this weekend in Finland during the women’s FIM World Motocross Championship event. Fontanesi won both races aboard her Yamaha YZ250F to claim 50 points, moving into second place in the overall standings.

Fontanesi won both motos in Finland ahead of championship leader, Steffi Laier. Laier still holds a 9 point lead in the championship standings.

Laier led for the majority of the first moto, but Fontanesi was able to pass her up on the final lap. Fontanesi had an easier race in the second moto, taking the win by more than 7 seconds.

“Today, the first moto was difficult because I had a bad start and after that I crashed so it took me a while to get on the pace,” Fontanesi said. “I was mostly thinking about having fun on the bike because I like this track and riding on sand so in the end I saw that I could go for the win and I passed them.

“Although I am used to the warm weather it was not easy to ride in the end. I did well in Italy last year so now I want to give my best at my home round.”

Fontanesi, 17, has finished on the podium at every FIM WMX event so far this season. Fonatanesi and the rest of the WMX will now head to Italy for the fourth round of the 2011 WMX World Championship.
