The FIM Motocross World Championship will be making its way stateside this weekend as the MX series heads to Glen Helen for the USGP.
It’s been three weeks since the Grand Prix of Valkenswaard and the World Motocross riders are eager to get back to work. This will be the second consecutive year that a World MX event has been held at Glen Helen, which gives US riders a unique opportunity to compete on the world stage.
"There are very few times in life that a U.S. motocross rider has the opportunity to prove to the world that he is truly the best on any given Sunday," said Glen Helen owner Bud Feldkamp. "Thanks to Youthstream and the FIM, one of these rare occasions is occurring this May at Glen Helen Raceway."
The Glen Helen race will have a little extra drama as the World Cup Trophy will be up for grabs. Feldkamp created the World Cup trophy in 2010 in order to create a “Europe Vs. America” type of atmosphere for the Glen Helen race.
Antonio Cairoli won the World Cup Trophy in 2010 before becoming 2010 FIM World MX1 Champion. Cairoli brought the trophy back to Italy for the year, but now the Americans will have another shot at keeping the trophy stateside.
"Last year I reluctantly handed over the World Cup Trophy to Giuseppe after Cairoli's impressive victory on his way to capturing the FIM World Championship of Motocross," said Feldkamp. "Since that time, the trophy has resided in Europe, and I look forward to the day we etch an American name on it and bring it home to where I think it truly belongs, the 'good old' U.S.A."
