Andrew McFarlane passed away after a crash at an Australian National Championship race this weekend. Race organizers said that McFarlane suffered serious head injuries in a crash during a practice session. The race was in the State Motorcycle Sports Complex in Broadford. McFarlane was a former number two in World Motocross, and was also a successful US motocross racer.
"Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great regret that we announce the passing of Andrew McFarlane," said event manager Kevin Williams.
McFarlane was 33. For the past nine years he had been competing in Europe and The United States. He had just returned to Australia last year. McFarlane finished second in the 2005 World Motocross championships.
According to McFarlane’s website, he was planning to retire after the 2010 season.
He is survived by his wife Natalie and their young daughter.
