After not getting on the podium during Race 1 of AMA Pro Daytona SportBike at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., Daytona 200 winner Josh Herrin came back to win Race 2 on Sunday.
The Team Graves Yamaha rider, who finished Race 1 in fourth, held off defending champion GEICO Powersports/RMR Suzuki rider Danny Eslick, winning by 0.028 of a second. Coming in third was Team Latus Motors Racing Ducati rider Steve Rapp.
Getting out front first during the 21-lap race was Eslick, followed by Herrin and his teammate Tommy Aquino, with Rapp and Crozier Roberson Motorsports Ducati rider Bobby Fong in tow.
After Eslick and Herrin swapped the lead a few times, Race 1 winner Martin Cardenas moved into third. The M4 Monster Energy Suzuki rider looked strong, but on lap 14 he lost the front-end. The Columbian crashed, but was able to remount and finish 10th.
Herrin took the win, not allowing Eslick a win. But Eslick still remains strong, with two runner-up positions at Fontana, and a fourth-place finish at Daytona.
Daytona SportBike action heads to Road Atlanta for Round 3 April 16-18.
