After an exciting finish, the 2012 edition of the Daytona 200 will be marked on everyones calendar as a must see. Today track conditions for the 2012 Daytona 200 were just about perfect with a 78 degree air temperature and 98 degree surface temperatures under clear skys.
The 2011 Daytona 200 was an action packed competition that proved to be one for the ages. One in which Jason DiSalvo won the delayed event after his team scrambled and changed engines in his bike. The 2012 Daytona 200 was just about as good.
2012 Daytona 200 Race Report
Just five laps into the 57 lap race, a group of six riders began to separate themselves from the rest of the field. By lap 12 #52 Joey Pascarella led the most laps battling back and forth with lead group.
On lap 14 2011 winner #9 Jason DiSalvo took his bike to the pit lane with what looked to be a mechanical failure. After hitting his pit box, the team did a short service and sent him back to the track. Later DiSalvos team reported that Jason had felt a vibration but he did not know where it originated so they changed his tire and sent him back out.
On lap 18 several in the lead pack broke off for the first round of pit stops, but #5 Dane Westby & #827 Tommy Aquino stayed out for one more lap. At lap 30 three riders including; #52 Joey Pascarella, #6 Cameron Beaubier and #36 Martin Cardenas had separated themselves from the rest of the field. By this time #9 Jason DiSalvo had climbed to the 5th place position. On 34 #5 Dane Westby carved his way to the front of lead pack of four.
After the second and final round of pit stops, #9 Jason DiSalvo took over the 4th place position. As the laps continued to count down, DiSalvo with his Gary Nixon tribute Triumph 675R was catching up to the top three riders by one second a lap.
By the last laps of the race, DiSalvo had whittled the double digit gap down to nothing and up to a second place finish. Ultimately #52 Joey Pascarella crossed the finish line first, pulling out a victory 0.048 seconds over the hard charging Jason DiSalvo.
