It's tough for any racer to claim the top spot on the time sheets when there are 39 riders lining up on the grid. It's even tougher when a rider is stepping up in class. Garrett Gerloff is stepping up from the WERA series this weekend to try his hand in the AMA Supersport division, and the young Yamaha rider impressed the field by taking the provisional pole position at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
Gerloff, who was second during the free practice session, beat out East coast points leader James Rispoli to take the provisional pole. Rispoli currently has a 39 point lead in the East, but the Ant Racing rider is also going for the overall championship this weekend, where he trails David Gaviria by 29 points.
But Rispoli will have three opportunities to score points this weekend. The AMA Supersport rider's final qualifying session will be scored with race points, giving the East coast rider a rare triple header this weekend.
Rispoli will have to fight off Hayden Gillim, Benny Solis, and Dustin Dominguez, who finished third, fourth, and fifth in the first qualifying session, if he wants to gather up more than 29 points this weekend.
