Bigger Names, Bigger Purse, for XR1200 Race at Indy

xr1200_moredayThis weekend the XR1200 class will get the chance to race in front of an international crowd, and the AMA, Harley, Vance and Hines, and Speed TV, are doing everything they can to make sure that the racing is as exciting as ever. A few big names have been added to the roster for the Indy GP, and the packed grid will now be fighting for a $30,000 purse.

There will be two XR1200 races this weekend, featuring series regulars like Chris Filmore, Steve Rapp, and Kyle Wyman. But with no AMA Superbike or Daytona Sportbike races scheduled for the weekend, the XR1200 race at Indy will see some wildcard entries to tighten up the competition.

Jason DiSalvo, who was the fastest Harley at the testing session last weekend, will be hopping on a Latus Motors Harley Davidson this weekend. DiSalvo will likely be among the top riders during the races, but more hype surrounds another rider, Shelina Moreda.

Moreda will be the first woman to ever compete at the Brickyard in the venue's 100 plus year history.

"I am very excited to be a part of this huge race," said Moreda, "and to not only be the first female to race in the AMA Pro XR1200 class, but the first female ever in the 100-year history of the track to race on a motorcycle at Indy!" The former District 3 California Dairy Princess -- who learned how to ride motorcycles while growing up on a dairy farm -- added, "My father is a huge fan of the Brickyard, and we were naturally excited about racing at a track that has strong ties to the dairy industry."

Steve Crevier, a former AMA Supersport Champion, six-time Canadian Superbike Champion, and reigning Canadian Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup Series Champion will also be lining up on the grid this weekend.

With a packed grid at Indy for the Harley class, Vance & Hines, Harley-Davidson, Dunlop, and  Harley-Davidson Insurance have decided to up the purse to $30,000. It's been more than a 100 years since a Harley has raced at Indy, so everyone involved is doing everything they can to mark the historic occasion. If you can't see the races live, SpeedTV will be airing both races on Sunday at 6pm.
