Benny Solis took the victory today for the AMA Supersport riders at Laguna Seca, while David Gaviria's fourth place finish was good enough to claim the West division championship.
Solis broke out to a big lead at the California circuit, but he almost lost control of his bike with a few laps remaining.
"I didn't want to make any mistakes, but I was just a little anxious," Solis said. "I went off and I almost dropped the bike, but I was able to keep it up and put on the gas. Luckily I was able to hold them off for the next few laps."
Behind Solis, an intense battle raged for the final two spots on the podium. Tomas Puerta, Corey Alexander, and David Gaviria went into the final turn side by side, before gunning it to the finish line where the podium was decided by .037 seconds.
Puerta took second place be a relatively large margin compared to the gap between Alexander and Gaviria for third. Gaviria lossed out on the podium by .003 seconds, but Yamaha rider wasn't too disappointed.
"I was very focused on the race because I did not want to crash," Gaviria said. "I made a mistake before the race ended, so Tomas and Corey got passed me. It was very tight at the end of the race, we all went into the final turn together. I wanted to be in the final three, but I was also thinking about the championship. So I am very happy."
