The Daytona Sportbike race at Mid-Ohio was a three person battle between Danny Eslick, Josh Herrin, and Jason DiSalvo. But with a few laps remaining, a charging M4 Suzuki ridden by Dane Westby jumped into the mix.
"I thought it was just the three of us," Eslick said. "But then a few laps to go and Dane comes running up the side. It kind of threw my for a curve ball. We had some passes at some unusual places. It was a clean race. A really fun race."
Westby would take his first Daytona Sportbike win by just .13 seconds ahead of Eslick.
"I was a little off of the pace at the beginning," Westby said. "But I was finally able to get back up toward the front. I just had to pull some demon braking maneuvers to get back up with these guys."
Westby has been a contender throughout the season, but he has never stepped up to the top of the podium.
"I've never really lead at the end," Westby said. "It was pretty gnarly. I really had to calm myself down to pull it out. This is just great. We had some bugs to shake out at the beginning of the year. But it feels like we're moving in the right direction.
Josh Herrin took the final spot on the podium, but the Yamaha rider wasn't satisfied with his finishing position.
"We made an error on the last few laps, and it cost us," Herrin said. "We need to pay attention and minimize those errors. I waited to long to make my move."
Jason DiSalvo took the fourth place spot ahead of Tommy Aquino.
