Dustin Dominguez claimed his first victory of the 2011 AMA Supersport season today at Mid-Ohio, beating out James Rispoli and Hayden Gillim.
Dominguez, who started in the pole position, fell behind Rispoli in the early laps of the AMA Supersport race, as "The Rocket" launched off the line and gained an early lead.
"We got a good start," Rispoli said. "We lead for the first four laps, and I thought I was running pretty good. But He made a good move. I was able to hang for a few laps, but I knew it was going to be hard to reel him back in. So I just had to conserve the tires and try to make sure we took second and got some good points."
Once Dominguez took the lead, he slowly began to pull away. Lap by lap the young Triumph rider put more space between himself and the rest of the pack. By the end of the AMA Supersport race, Dominguez had earned an 8 second lead.
"I just put my head down and knew I had to catch him," Dominguez said. "I started cutting his lead down, and was eventually able to pull away."
Dominguez win today is the first AMA victory for Triumph since 1999. Dominguez has only been riding the Triumph for a few weeks, so there are probably a few more victories to come.
"This was our first weekend to really test the bike," Dominguez said. "And everything just came together. I'm really happy to get this win for Triumph."
Hayden Gillim claimed the final spot on the podium.
