Josh Hayes was the fastest rider today at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama. Hayes took the provisional pole position ahead of Tommy Hayden with a 1’25.980 lap time.
Hayes has taken the pole position at every AMA racing event so far this season, and with a chance of rain tomorrow morning, his Q1 finish could keep that streak alive.
“I was surprised to get in the 1’25s,” Hayes said. “It worked out pretty well. It if rains tomorrow, we can treat it like another practice session and just make sure that we have a good race bike, rain or shine.”
Tommy Hayden took the second spot on the time sheets, finishing .2 seconds behind Hayes.
Hayes and Hayden raced around the Barber Motorsports track last year, but with the championship in the bag, Hayes didn’t push himself for the win.
“This place suits Tommy very well,” Hayes said. “The two good races I’ve had with Tommy here, I didn’t have to stick my neck out to win the championship. But things are a little different this year. I watch last year’s race one a couple of times, and I think there are some things to improve on. We’ll try to have a better showing this year.”
Ben Bostrom, Rogery Hayden, and Blake Young came across the line in 3rd, 4th, and 5th, putting four Suzuki’s into the top five.
