Sunday Morning Race Report From Road America

Sunday_MorningClear blue skies, a mild breeze, and 70 degree temperatures greeted the racers this morning as they put in a few warm-up laps around the track. David Gaviria, Josh Herrin, and Blake Young all took wins on Saturday, but their work isn’t over yet.

For the Superbike riders, Josh Hayes led the pack again around the track during the warm-up session. Hayes has made it a habit to lead qualifying, practice, and warm-up session, but he’s struggled to find that extra push at the end of the race. Young has taken two consecutive last lap wins against Hayes in the AMA Superbike series, and he’ll be looking to do the same today. Hayes said that he was “hitting the drawing board” to find a way to stay in front of today’s race, but the long drafting stretch that finishes the race at Road America could make that difficult.

The Daytona Sportbike riders will have an equally entertaining race. Josh Herrin took his second consecutive win yesterday as season leader Jason DiSalvo crashed out of the race. DiSalvo also took a spill during the warm-up session today, and was only able to complete two laps. DiSalvo’s crew said that the bike was undamaged during the crash, and DiSalvo will be ready to retake the top spot this afternoon.

But staying on two wheels won’t be enough for the Latus Ducati rider. Herrin, Jacobsen, Beaubier, and Eslick have all shown the speed at Road America that could allow them to take the race win.

David Gaviria took the win for the Supersport riders on Saturday, but just like the Daytona Sportbike race, he did it without the competition of his biggest rival. Tomas Puerta retired from the Supersport race with a mechanical error and will be looking to make up the points this afternoon.

But the Colombians need to watch out for James Rispoli and the Ant Racing team. Rispoli took a podium spot during the first race and led the warm-up session this morning.

All About Bikes will have live results from all the races. The AMA Supersport riders will hit the track first at 1:15, followed by the Daytona Sportbike riders at 2:15, and finally the AMA Superbike race at 3:30.
