Gaviria Tops Q2, Puerta Takes Pole Position

Supersport_QualifyingThe grid is set for the AMA Supersport riders at Road America. Tomas Puerta will be leading the way during this afternoon’s race. Puerta will be joined by Travis Wyman, David Gaviria, and Stefano Mesa on the front row.

Most of the Supersport riders weren’t able to better their times from Q1. Gaviria claimed the fastest time of the morning, but it was about a half second slower than what he did yesterday. Stefano Mesa was one of the only riders to better his time.

Mesa dropped two seconds from the first qualifying session to earn himself the final spot on the front row.

“The bike is really fast,” said Mesa, who is riding a Ducati 848.. “It handles so good. It doesn’t go anywhere and it is really fast.”

Travis Wyman was the third fastest during the second qualifying session, but will be starting in second due to his Q1 time.

“It felt good going out,” Wyman said. “(At the beginning of the session) we were about a second off our pace from yesterday. We were struggling a little a bit, but I was able to put my head down and get close to my time yesterday. So I’m happy to be on the front row.”

Puerta will be starting from the pole position, but he wasn’t too happy about his performance during Q2.

“Today, I didn’t feel fast like yesterday,” Puerta said. “I couldn’t do a fast lap like I always try to do. I didn’t want to push because I didn’t want to crash. I felt good when I got back and they told me I had the top time.”
