Five riders had an opportunity to win the Daytona Sportbike race at Miller Motorsports Park today, but it was Josh Herrin who put in a late charge to take the win. Herrin put in the fastest lap of the race on the final lap to take the win from PJ Jacobsen by .16 seconds.
Herrin, Jacobsem, West, and Westby swapped spots throughout the race. The top four riders were constantly within one second of each other and often crossed the lines three or four across.
"It was pretty crazy in the beginning," Herrin said. "I'm just glad to be up here. I'm looking forward to some more consistent results for the rest of the season."
Herrin has been a top rider this season, but a penalty left him behind in the point standings. Herrin made up for that today, especially since season leaders Jason DiSalvo and Danny Eslick finished outside of the top 5.
"It was a lot of points for me," Herrin said. "It puts me back in the championship. I'm really strong in Wisconsin. I'm usually strong at the beginning of the season, but it looks like I'm finally hitting my stride now."
Cameron Beaubier also made a last lap move to move ahead of Corey West. Beaubier's podium finish was the first in his AMA Daytona Sportbike career.
"It feels great to get the podium for the first time in Sportbike," Beaubier said.
Behind the top three, West had to settle for fourth ahead of Dane Westby. DiSalvo, who had been the polesitter, finished in sixth ahead of Danny Eslick.
