It was a war of attrition today for the Supersport riders as they raced around a wet track at Miller Motorsports Park. But Corey Alexander didn’t pay too much attention to the crashing drama, as he cruised to a 18 second victory.
Benny Solis, the pole sitter, was the first rider to take a spill at MMP. Solis was leading when he lost the front end and brought his bike into the heavy Utah mud. With Solis out, the race became a battle between Tomas Puerta, David Gaviria, Travis Ohge, and Corey Alexander.
Corey Alexander would eventually take the lead and spend the majority of the race growing the gap. Alexander led by more than 25 seconds at one point, but started slowing his pace toward the end of the race.
“I thought they were still with me,” Alexander said. ‘But a couple laps later I looked at my board and saw that I had a 10 second lead.”
Alexander, who is the nephew of Superstock champion Rich Alexander, looked like a seasoned veteran today despite the fact that he just turned 17.
“That was only my second time racing in the rain,” Alexander said. “I didn’t think I was pushing too hard. I felt really comfortable out there today.”
Behind a quick Alexander, David Gaviria, Tomas Puerta, and Travis Ohge battled for the remaining spots on the podium. Gaviria rode a solid race to secure second place, and Travis Ohge made a last lap pass to take third away from Puerta.
“I was confident with the rain, being from the North West,” said Ohge, who lives in Oregon. “Tomas put up a great race, but I guess I just wanted worse in the end.”
