Solis Earns Pole Position, Awarded Race Points

benny_solis_qualifyingThe AMA Supersport class hasn’t raced yet at the Miller Motorsports Park circuit, but Benny Solis has already taken a race win. Due to the split Supersport series, the qualifying session at MMP was worth race points. Solis took the pole position, and in the process, earned 31 points toward the championship.

“I knew we weren’t going to have a double header, so the qualifying was kind of like a race,” Solis said. “I had the fastest lap, then I was overtaken, then I got it back on the last lap. It was one of the hardest qualifying sessions I’ve ever had.”

John Syzmanski, the AMA Pro Racing Director of Communications, explained the situation.

“The AMA Supersport is divided into the East and West divisions,” Syzmanski said. “There are two events in the West division that are single races.... All of the races in the East division are double headers, so to balance out the points, we’ve designated two qualifying sessions in the West to receive racing points.”

Solis has been the quickest Supersport rider at Miller this weekend, and could potentially earn his second consecutive double. Solis won both races at Infineon, and is the man to beat this afternoon during the AMA Supersport race at MMP.
