With the rain starting to come down, the XR1200 series hit the track for their first qualifying session of the weekend. Michael Barnes set the pace for the XR1200 class, claiming the provisional pole position at Miller Motorsports Park.
“I’m just having a blast out there,” Barnes said. “I haven’t smiled this big in a long time. These bikes are just fun to ride.”
The sky was grey when the XR1200s hit the track, so Barnes got aggressive early and put in a few quick laps. When the rain came down he brought his bike into the pits, but was forced to make another go at it when Chris Filmore bested his time by a few tenths of a second.
Barnes got lucky with a slight break in the weather, and was able to lower his time to 2’07.343, more than .8 seconds faster than Filmore.
“It’s such a wide-open track,” Barnes said. ‘I’ve learned a few tricks on (the XR1200) and I got to use them today.”
