Josh Hayes led the AMA Superbike riders around the Miller Motorsports Park track today during the first qualifying session of the weekend. Hayes finished with a 1'50.401 lap time, narrowly beating out Blake Young and Tommy Hayden.
Hayes has taken the pole position at every race so far this season, but has only able to convert one of those into a race win.
"I don't mind being the guy they're chasing," Hayes said. "I've been the guy in the forefront, I've been the carrot. And I'm still trying to figure a few things out... trying to find a way into the 1'49s."
Young, who has two wins this season, and his teammate Tommy Hayden, who took one win at Infineon, were nipping at Hayes' heels throughout the session. Roger Lee Hayden also put in a solid session, and was followed by Larry Pegram, the last rider to finish within a second of Hayes' pace.
The Superbike riders will return to the track tomorrow morning for the final qualifying session. The Superbike race will be on Monday.
