Josh Hayes was five laps away from doing the double at Infineon today, but a late race pass by Tommy Hayden ended those hopes. Tommy Hayden claimed the AMA Superbike race win at the Sonoma track, beating out Hayes, Young, and Rapp.
Hayden shadowed Hayes around the track, but a flawless ride by Hayes left the Suzuki rider little opportunity to pass.
“I was following him pretty close, but couldn’t find my way by,” Hayden said. “With about 10 to go I felt like if I got in front of him I could go faster. I was following him pretty close, trying to set up the pass. Then I started running out of laps so I knew I had to put my head down and do it. This one feels really good.”
Hayden made his move with five laps remaining. Once Hayden took the lead, Hayes made a small mistake that allowed Hayden to extend the gap. Hayden would stay about a second ahead of Hayes throughout the final laps, before putting on the speed on the final lap to finish 1.9 seconds ahead of the Yamaha rider.
“I had a really hard race,” Hayes said. “The bike was a bit of a handful today. I didn’t feel like I was totally sharp on the bike. I felt a little sloppy out there today.”
Behind the top duo, Blake Young rode a lonely race for third. Young came in 18 seconds behind the leader, but was well ahead of Steve Rapp and Larry Pegram, who completed the top five.
