Josh Hayes was the fastest rider on the track today during the final qualifying session for the AMA Superbike series at Infineon Raceway. Hayes, who won both races at Infineon in 2010, will lead a front grid consisting of Tommy Hayden, Blake Young, and Ben Bostrom.
Hayes earned his second pole position of the season with a 1’35.717 lap time. Hayes was the only rider to lap in the 1’35s as he beat out Hayden by .4 seconds to earn the bonus pole point.
“Every point counts,” said Hayes. “Look at the series last year. These bonus points are really important.”
Hayes ended the session with a crash that did a little damage to his Suzuki R1. But Hayes said that the Graves Yamaha crew should have no problem getting the bike race ready for this afternoon.
“I’m not worried at all,” Hayes said. “I have no doubts that the crew will get it back up and running. We've got another identical bike, too, so I'm not worried at all."
Hayes will be joined by three Suzukis on the front row. Steve Rapp was the quickest BMW, and will lead the second row this afternoon. Rapp will be joined by Martin Cardenas, David Anthony, and Larry Pegram.
