This weekend, May 15-17, Round 5 of the 2009 AMA Pro Road Racing season will be held at Infineon Raceway in the Sonoma Valley. The Kawasaki Superbike Showdown will feature races for AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike presented by Parts Unlimited and AMA Pro Daytona SportBike presented by AMSOIL on Saturday and Sunday. Also taking place at Infineon Raceway is the West division of AMA Pro Super Sport, presented by Shoei.
American Superbike Championship leader, Mat Mladin, last won at Infineon Raceway in 2007 when he took victory in both American Superbike races that weekend. The Australian rider is undefeated for the 2009 season taking seven wins in the first seven races as well as winning every pole. Mladin’s Rockstar/Makita Yoshimura Suzuki teammate Tommy Hayden sits second in Championship standings, 77 points behind Mladin. Geoff May, National Guard Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 rider, is third in the American Superbike Championship with just 22 fewer points than Tommy Hayden.
Daytona Sportbike Championship leader Jamie Hacking, Monster Energy Attack Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R rider, leads Danny Eslick, GEICO Powersports/RMR Buell 1125R, by three points, and Martin Cardenas, Team M4 Suzuki GSX-R600, by two points. With only a five point spread between first and third, the winner of the Daytona Sportbike Championship is any man’s guess.
