The World Superbike Championship at Monza this weekend was quite an action-packed race. It was truly a race where nobody knew what was going to happen...and just when you thought you had it all figured out, something happened to totally change the outcome of the race. So, exactly what went down at Monza?
To start, five riders. They all crashed in the first corner of the first lap after getting tangled up with each other. That kind of set the tone for the rest of the race, and after a long delay the riders were able to hit the track again. Ben Spies (on a Yamaha World Superbike), who started out on the pole, pulled ahead early on. Michel Fabrizio (on a Ducati Xerox), was behind him, followed by Nori Haga (his Ducati teammate). Haga was holding his own in the race (which was his 250th in the series), but he crashed on the fourth lap and never really got back in the running.
For a while, it looked like Ben Spies had the race in the bag. It was the final lap, the flag was out, people were cheering, and...and...he ran out of gas. Fabrizio took the win, although Spies redeemed himself in a later race.
Here are the current point standings, after Monza:
Nori Haga - 200 Points
Ben Spies - 146 Points
Michel Fabrizio - 125 Points
Leon Haslam - 103 Points
Tom Sykes - 90 Points
