Although AMA Pro American Superbike rider Josh Hayes took the checkered flag at Road Atlanta, he was later pushed back to sixth place after an AMA Pro Racing amendment, giving the win to Blake Young.
This happened to the Team Graves Yamaha rider due a jumped start. Hayes served his stop-and-go penalty on lap 3, just before the race was red flagged due to a crash involving Trey Batey. When the race was re-started, the Daytona Motorsports Group allowed Hayes to start on the pole position due to already serving his penalty. But Yoshimura Suzuki protested, and AMA amended the final result, placing Hayes in sixth.
Taking the official win was Young. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider had his first-ever pole, and led 10 of the 20-lap event. Before the final outcome was amended, Young was leading on the final straight, but Hayes Yamaha YZF-R1 beat him to the finish line by 0.183 of a second.
Finishing second was Rockstar Makita/Yoshimura Suzuki rider Tommy Hayden. The
Also close was the arrival of the rider in third, National Guard Jordan Suzuki rider Jake Zemke, the man who took both races during round 1 in Daytona. He finished 0.154 of a second behind Hayden.
As these top three riders were running tight, Pat Clark Motorsports Yamaha rider Ben Bostrom arrived at the finish line 9.450 seconds after Young to claim fourth place. Rounding out the top five was John Hopkins, who was forced to place a new tire on his M4 Monster Suzuki while the race was red flagged. This resulted in a restart in the back of the grid, but although still dealing with a healing wrist, fought back to take fifth.
The accident that caused the red flag involved Vesrah Suzuki rider Trey Batey. The 49-year-old went down hard in turn 6, and was air lifted to the hospital. No official reports have been released about his injuries.
