Last summer before the Virginia Beach Bike Classic, city police set up motorcycle-only checkpoints. The motorcycle community criticized the checkpoints saying that it was a form of profiling. Legislation is curring moving through the Virginia House of Delegates that would ban checkpoints that specifically target motorcyclists.
The legislation, HB187, was proposed by Todd Gilbert. The bill unamiously passed through a house subcommittee this morning.
Danielson, counsel to the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists, said that checkpoints are a great way to make sure people are safe on the road, but police shouldn't be allowed to specifically target motorcyclists.
"We're not opposed to checkpoints. They're a useful public safety tool," Danielson told Hampton Roads. "We just don't want to be singled out."
