The electric motorcycle industry is growing nearly as fast as the technology behind it. Zero Motorcycles, one of the pioneers of electric motorcycles, recently held a private demonstration for Ray LaHood, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation.
The demonstration was held in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation 2011 (APEC). Zero was participating in the Innovative Technologies in Sustainable Transportation program along with companies like Nissan Leaf, Honda Clarity, Chevy Volt, BMW Mini-E, and Ford Focus EV.
"We are honored to be here and to see the interest from Secretary LaHood," said Jay Friedland, Vice President of Strategy and Sustainability for Zero Motorcycles. "Not only did he see the potential for these electric motorcycles, he was very encouraged by the green transportation jobs Zero Motorcycles is creating here in America. Our motorcycles are truly game changing and once you ride one, you immediately realize that electric motorcycles are here to stay. Our motorcycles are high performance, fun to ride and the best part is, you can buy one today."
The government has been encouraging the use of electric vehicles by offering federal tax credits to people who buy electric motorcycles. LaHood said that he intends to keep these tax incentives in place in order to encourage growth in companies like Zero Motorcycles.
But LaHood isn't the only person who sees the value in electric vehicles. Last week BMW and Husqvarna unveiled an electric motorcycle concept called the E-Go. If more major brands get into the electric motorcycle game, we could see incredible developments in the next few years.
