MIC Issues Call to Action: Last Push to Stop Youth Motorcycle Ban

No_Dirt_BikesThis week, the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade will review the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The Motorcycle Industry Council, the AMA, and many other manufacturers and motorsports enthusiasts, have called on congress to revise the CPSIA, which would ban youth motorcycles due to new lead content provisions.

“Congress knows that the risk to children comes from banning youth models, not from the lead in metal parts, and there now is a will to solve this problem once and for all,” said Paul Vitrano, MIC’s general counsel. “We urge Congress to stop the ban by either lowering the age range of ‘children’s products’ to age 6 and under or granting a categorical exemption for youth ATVs and motorcycles, as provided in Representative Denny Rehberg’s bill, H.R. 412.”

The MIC has sent a letter to congress, and they are urging the motorsports community to do the same. The MIC is directing people to www.stopthebannow.com, where they can download videos and send emails about CPSIA to congress.

This weekend, big players from around the motorcycle industry, reporters, and motorsports enthusiasts, will be meeting in Indianapolis for the Dealer Expo. The MIC sees that as a huge advantage to push their message.

“The timing of this hearing is perfect,” Vitrano added. “With much of the industry gathering in Indianapolis this week for the Dealer Expo, we have a tremendous opportunity to flood Capitol Hill with hand-signed letters and electronic messages asking our Representatives and Senators to stop the ban.”

The hearing will be on February 17th, so if you have something to say to your congressman, you better do it soon.
