Zero Motorcycles, the current market leader in electric motorcycles, has been awarded its second large-scale grant from California in order to produce an advanced new electric powertrain. Actually, the number is $2,018,000 and it comes from a series of awards and matching gifts given by state and local agencies. These originating organizations include the California Energy Commission, the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District (MBUAPCD), the City of Santa Cruz and others.
The grant will immediately be put to work at Zero’s research and development program in their Santa Cruz, California, headquarters. This, of course, is great for the local economy as it provides jobs and economic growth for the community – something every city can use in these troubled economic times. It is also a good indication of where Zero is going with their products. Their current line-up includes four different models all based around a similar power system, though each one has its own specialty.
However, at the core, they are all virtually identical. Increasing monies spent on designing and engineering a new drive system for electric powered two-wheelers points towards something new and significant coming from the minds of Zero. This new system is required if you are planning to develop a higher-spec vehicle which will go further, faster and excel beyond your peers in the marketplace.
As I always say with this sector of the motorcycle industry, stay tuned! You never know what we will hear from Zero Motorcycles tomorrow…
