2010 BMW R1200RT, R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure – Newfound Power

The new models from our friends in Bavaria are your standard incremental changes to a motorcycle which is already near perfect for its purpose. Each of the updated models – R1200RT, R1200GS, and R1200GS Adventure – has received the double-overhead cam (DOHC), eight-valve boxer-twin engine from BMW’s HP2 Sport. However, the engine has been further modified with two sparkplugs per cylinder for improved power and combustion; the latter to meet strict Euro 4 emissions standards. Power output from the engine is rated at 110 hp and 88 lb-ft of torque – a 5% bump in power. All of the models have also seen further improvement to their individual roles in the model line-up.

bike1The R1200RT is considered the most luxurious and stylish sport-touring mount in the industry today. The 2010 model will only help solidify that image. BMW’s ESA II (2nd generation Electronic Suspension Adjustment) has been added to the RT; the ability to change suspension settings automatically and precisely while in motion is a very comforting feature. The cockpit has also been refined with a taller electronically-adjustable windscreen, more protective fairing panels, and improved dash design. It only gets better…

bike2The R1200GS and R1200 GS Adventure do not receive many changes themselves. However, we already know how very well these bikes work for their pilot, so what needs to be changed? More power is always nice, and they have 5% more of that. A little more flexibility would be nice as well. For that, they have provided the same incredible list of options, including ESA, ABS, GPS, and many other acronyms (GS Adventure model has many standard). They also gain – like the RT – a new and improved dash layout.

All in all, very useful improvements to already well-built, long living, long distance motorcycles.
