The motorcycles riding at the salt flats in Utah are some of the fastest on earth. So when they crash, they crash big. Rocky Robinson was trying to break his 394 mile per hour land speed record at the Salt Flats when his motorcycle malfunctioned and sent Rocky on the ride of his life.
The Union reports that the traction control on Rocky's bike malfunctioned, and all of the power was shifted to the rear wheel. The bike pitched left before launching into the air and crashing upside down.
"The biggest thought I had was to hold onto the bars as tight as I could," said Robinson. "I didn't want anything going outside of the bike."
Robinson and the bike flipped another 15 times before coming to rest.
Robinson spent the night in the hospital where he was treated for a broken shoulder, a broken collar bone, and large gashes in his left leg.
"My surgeon's really good," he said. "I'm going to see him Tuesday to see what we can do to get me put back together again. My first initial thought was, 'I'm done,' but I've said that before. It's something I don't have an answer for at this point."
Robinson was shooting for a speed over 394 mph. His crash occurred just beyond the 100 mph mark.
