Can-Am Hybrid-Energy Development Program Gets Big Money Injection Hot

Can-Am SpyderBombardier Recreation Products, BRP, is currently working on developing a new hybrid engine for the Can-Am Spyder. It is the only hybrid roadster development program in the world, so it isn't too surprising to see the program get some big funding.

Automotive Partnership Canada just gave $6.2 million to help with the project, and BRP has put in $5.1 million, giving the Center of Technology Advancement $11.3 million dollars to play around with over the next four years.

“Our mandate is ambitious and complex,” explained Mihai Rasidescu, president and general manager of the CTA. “Our goal is to develop completely new electric hybrid technology for a three-wheel vehicle that uses 50% less fuel and reduces CO2 emissions by 50% while maintaining its speed, power and performance.”

The Can-Am Spyder was first introduced in 2007, and is one of the most unique rides on the road. BRP and the CTA are committed to keeping the Can-Am Spyder ahead of the curve, and are using the vehicle to further the advancement of green technologies.

"BRP confirmed its commitment to accelerate the development of cleaner and more efficient new technologies,” stated José Boisjoli, BRP's president and CEO. “The powertrain technologies used in our snowmobiles, side-by-side vehicles, and outboard engines are already the best in the industry in terms of fuel consumption, and are milestones towards our goal of providing consumers with increasingly eco-performing technology. Without a doubt this applied research project will produce a skilled new generation of engineers and have a significant impact on several levels.”
