For the past twelve year the Raid de Himalaya has been attracting off-road enthusiast to brave a course through the Himalayan Mountains. Most Americans are familiar to the Baja 1000 which operates similarly to the Raid de Himalaya inviting 4X4 vehicles as well as motorcycles to compete to the finish. Because of the harsh terrain the event also offers two versions, a X-treme course (7-8 days) and an Adventure Trial (3 days). While the Himalaya’s insure both are not for the faint of heart, but even experienced riders are suggested to attempt the “easier” Adventure Trial for their first year in the Raid.
Competitors spend nearly a week on course, spending at least two days above an altitude of 15,000ft. The course is created to test both the physical and mental readiness of all the adventurers. Riders stay at hotels during the "night halts" and sometimes just tents outside in the freezing mountain temperatures. Because of the low octane in Indian and Tibetan fuel, some riders are even burdened with carrying extra fuel for themselves. There are road checks every 30 kilometers to make sure no competitors have wandered off-course.
Professional and amateurs are classified separately, inviting anyone who dares up into the mountains. Despite the rugged, wild sound of the terrain the organization running the Raid is meticulous and careful in removing as many danger-risks as humanly possible. There is a rigorous pre-race tech inspections in addition to health and tech inspections along the way.
If you view this as amazing or insane, there's no denying it’s an incredible test of human versus nature for the ultimate thrill seekers.
