After a routine traffic stop for vehicle code violations, CHP Officer, Tom Coleman, was killed after the suspects refused to stop and he gave chase. The officer’s motorcycle struck a tractor trailer and burst into flames. He was ejected from his motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger gave his condolences to the family, and flags at the state capital will fly at half staff for three days.
"Officer Thomas Coleman committed his life to protecting the safety of the people of California," Schwarzenegger said. "He was an outstanding officer who demonstrated his dedication and selflessness through his hard work in the line of duty."
The suspect’s vehicle later crashed and four occupants were arrested and booked on charges unknown to AAB Magazine. Coleman leaves behind a wife and two children.
Earlier this week, another CHP Motorcycle Officer was involved in a serious accident when he was struck on the freeway shoulder by an oncoming motorist. 27-year veteran, Phillip Ortiz, remains in critical condition after the Wednesday accident, and is expected to have a long recovery.
Also this week, an LAPD Motorcycle Officer suffered minor injuries when he wrecked his motorcycle on Interstate105.
I think this raises the question, “Is being a motorcycle cop too much of a hazard?” It’s already dangerous enough just being a cop, is there any need to add on the risk of being on a bike as well? Let me know what you think.
